Don't forget that your speedo is driven by the engine gearbox and the 12" std wheels give the correct mileage or kiloage ( : Try 13" rims and get the right tyres & it will be pretty close. Most tyre shops and garages have a chart to figure what rims/ tyres are right to suit your speedo...

hard to say... can the sender unit be accessed without taking the tank out?

I have had problems with my Speedo illumination so maybe things can wear out or come loose under there also. I have not even figured out how to get the speedo out to check wiring and replace a bulb yet ( :
