Original wheels

Postby yelodog » Wed Apr 30, 2003 8:51 am

Restoring '83 T2. I need the double 3-hole original cast wheels in good shape. There must be a lot of these around because every T2 has new wheels. Are the originals 13X5?  I will drive with another set of new wheels to use 195/60 tyres (maybe). I also need to know of a wheel/tyre dealer in NZ that knows which combinations worK. What is the fattest  tyre I can use on 6, 7, or 8 inch wide rims? Will any 14 inch rims work? I want max cornering on wet , no spinouts. My T2 in the paintshop now! Engine runs sweet, I am afraid to mess with it, but hope for clutch, exhaust, and brake upgrades soon.

Hiya Dog

I'm running 195/50 15's.  You could possibly go a little wider if you went to 16's or 17's with an even lower profile but you wouldn't get much more.  The sizes I've gone with give the same as standard rolling radius so gearing/revs remains as standard.

Cheers

I'd like to go to 14 inch or 15 inch wheels for my T2. When I shop for wheels, what specs to state? What is the  hole pattern? how much offset will work and stay in the fenders without rubbing?  How wide can the wheels be? I like the idea of the 195/50/15s, anybody have pictures? I'm  looking for a steel-black 5 spoke design. Where can I shop for those in NZ? Can I shop online? Should I go rally tread pattern for best results on wet pavement? How noisy are agressive tread tyres? Thanks, yelodog

On that last: I didn't mean steel wheels! I meant titanium-look dark gray or black cast aluminium! I think I'll go with 15 inchers, but what rim width or offset? What tyres will give same diameter as my current 185 60R13? Or would a tiny bit more diameter be OK? Thks yd

man you ask a lot of questions.. each rim size you go up you decrease side wall height for instance on my t2 i run 195/65/13 yeah i know, a little bit baloonie but hey it sticks like dogg shit (aye)
195/65/13  -  205/60/13
195/55/14  -  205/50/14
195/45/15            etc
195/35/16              "
195/25/17              "
i'm pretty sure thats how it goes, the way to work out your side wall height is.. take the width of your tyre and divide it by two which for 195 gives you 97.5 then you divide that number by the side wall height turned into a percentage of 100, i.e 65 becomes .65

e.g     195 / 2 = 97.5

          97.5 x .65 = 63.5(mm (side wall height)

          63.5 x 2 = 126.75(mm(total side wall height)

          126.175 + 325mm(rim diameter) = 452.17(total
                                                                               ride
                                                                             height)

anyway thats what i was taught if its wrong take it up with chch polytech who made me pay 1800 to learn that
