Head Gasket
Hi all,
Just about to replace a head gasket and want to verify the NA City uses the same as T2. I know it's a whole lot cheaper! ;) Don't need a gasket set as we took the head off with manifolds etc still attached.
Keen to get it back on the road though. Not sure why it blew as it's only been on about 6 months. Head was cheked and skimmed last time. All looks OK, but has blown through on cyl 4. Any ideas?

Hey i was just wondering how far you got your head skimmed last time. did you get it skimmed for more performance or just because after the gasket blew it was not straight? Just wondering this because one of my mates got his head skimmed down on his civic for performance and after that it smoked. I wouldnt want to get my city one skimmed down for better pefomance if i no it will smoke badly.

Check the head studs, if one of those is a bit funky it could cause you problems.

You can get a brand spanking new city turbo gasket from Segedin Auto Parts over here in NZ Pete. (http://www.segedin.co.nz) its only like $35 too, they have quite a range of old honda parts, including turbo ones

how many times did you torque yo head bro... as you have to do it at least 3 times.. and make sure all the studs and nuts are very clean and lubed so as to give even torque too... also have you checked your block at all?

Cheers all,
Called Segedin and they refered me to Cliff Bond - Chch Have found one for $55. ;D They are sure the Turbo is different to NA.
Haven't checked block. May need to! :-/

Hi Pete et all,
Zounds like a torque problem to me...are you using bolts or studs? Someone else ran down the procedure to be sure you are getting proper torque spec. Important oon a naturally aspirated hop up....VERY important on a Turbo motor.
A question...does anyone know it the Turbo headgasket will work on a 1500-1600 EC-EF block and EL head combo?

An EL head has a bore thats about 20mm bigger than a City Turbo so my guess is no

Oh Colzaaaaa,
The 1500 which you speak is under the Bonnet (Hood for we USA iuns) of your newest potential Hotrod. Our 1600 is the same block, with a stroker crank-rods assembly out of the early Accord...i.e. EF motor. Start lookin around for a Lynx single sidedraft manifold (I think they are still in business "Downunder"), and we can build them together...abet half the world apart...who'd a thunk it?
Oh yeah, about the headgasket...I woke up about ten minutes after I sent the Email and remembered the City was what? 66mm. But, the City crank is about the same length as the 1600 stroker from the early Accord, so obviously that length of stroke is not a problem on a Turbo motor . 8)

So, what exactly are you making? You dont know of any crossflow head options for the EC 1488 block do you John?

It is not a crossflow, the Lynx manifold will bolt to the head you have in your new 4-dr.

Yeah, im trying to find a crossflow head i can bolt on. Id like to keep the block if i can, but crossflow makes things awkward for boost ::)
If i have to swap engines to get crossflow then im not sure what ill do :-/ i dunno, ive got a little while to think on it while i get the body sorted out.

OK, here's my basic plan... Lynx single side draft manifold, Jenvey short DCOE style throttle body,( for clearance and which is a bolt on), custom intake plenum. Iif I can find one a Turbo City exhaust manifold, and rather extensive rework on the combustion chambers in the head. ;D I'm hoping for 140-150HP on our crappy stateside fuel (89-90 OCT), and hopefully a relatively moderately stressed motor for good engine life. I don't think that it should be too much of a problem from 1600cc. What do you think?
