Gear shifting--Problem

Postby Muppet » Mon Jul 04, 2005 3:34 pm

Have a problem changing gears. The problem is that went the car is stationary it is very hard to change in to any gear, but when the car is moving it is sweet as to change gear, anyone got any ideas what the problem is and where to start looking. Doesn't make a difference if the engine is warm or cold.

Also have problem with selecting reverse, seem to crunch reverse with selecting it.

for reverse, put it in first for a sec then it should slide right in ;D i used to have the same trouble until city_cabrolet told me that little trick
i think there is no syncro for reverse or something

as for the other changes try putting your foot on the clutch hehe :P

sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment... either that or its naffed, where does the pedal engage, at the floor or at the top of its travel?... you can actually drive your car sweet with out using the clutch if you know how.. the clutch just makes it easier

Starting the car without a clutch is a bit more fun tho ;)

Put it in first gear.
Start the car with it in gear, dont hit anything.
Get up some speed and shift to second without the clutch.
And youre away ;D

I rode my Moto home with a broken clutch cable one time... wasn't as easy as it sounds.

I started it in neutral, and rev'd, then just clunked it into first... it stalled twice at a set of lights, 3rd time gave it a little extra and popped a wheelie 8) (mind you, this was my old bike, a early 80's SR185 road bike :o not exactly made for wheelies)

Don't think i'd attempt it in my Honda... bikes are ALOT easier (ie sequential shift etc)

How easy or not, is it to adjust up the clutch?
As I suspect that this is the problem,  as a new clutch was fitted before I brought the car and I've only had problems changing just lately and getting worst.

Check the clutch adjustment, if it is good, then the problem could be the locking pin on the first and second synchronizer, or the 1st and 2nd shift fork.
