why not give rebuilding the CV's a go

i done them on my civic. Only thing is its a little messy.

You can order new boots if you require

Check around on the net if you need instructions

probably helps if you have a wash tub  ;D

but cost me about $5 worth of grease to redo the CV's so you gotta be happy with that

DR86 did u ever get this problem sorted...?

...got a quote "THIS DEFINETLY SOUNDS LIKE THE CV JOINTS. BOTH INNER AND OUTER REPLACED IS $225 FOR LEFT AND THE SAME PRICE FOR RIGHT ONE  IF IT NEEDS DOING AS WELL. THEY CARRY A 2 YEAR WARRANTY".
???  :P    this is Brissie buy the way...

I was`wondering the accord with the brakes you can swap over onto T2 hubs...do you think the entire bit could be swapped over? hub, brakes inc. cv's and bearing etc obviously?!?!  Im thinking if the hubs diff and driveshaft mates differnt then know but any idea?
might be cheaper or similar price plus get a brake upgrade.

I think you will be asking for trouble swapping the whole hub over. Most likely the angle that the strut comes out of the top will be different, and all sorts of other measurements like where the lower arm attaches and things.
In auckland you can just go to pick-a-part with a city hub if you want and pick and mix with brake parts, thats how me and Colza worked out what fits second gen civics.(Well actually there was a whole 2nd gen there so we didnt have to take our own hub, not very often that there is a city turbo there tho.)

Got another quote from Pedders, they said would replace each side, new shaft and (I think) outer joints only (?) for $225 per side with fitting for a pair at $160 inc wheel alignment (whoopee). so thats $620ish what honda pretty much quoted me... also the quote above.
Honda advised as we know the actual cv boots are no longer n production... eek. so hoefully mine are just worn from were and tear over the last twenty years and the rubbers boots aren't screwed.

Also questioned about bearings...gave me a quote of $130 per wheel, ...
....wish i was richer.

PS i pay off the last $1400 off to the bank tomorrow for our little T2 yay!!!

You should be able to get bearings much cheaper than that. Go to a  dedicated bearing shop, they usually give the best deals.

Sorry guys,

Smithy, the grinding noise turned out to be my bearing (in the hub).

Here's my story:

Drive shafts were ok, I 'fixed' them with one of those universal drive shaft boot kit things. Took my CV joint apart and found the casing to be broken in three places (where the internal bearing structure revolves). Removed the broken pieces of casing, degreased the whole (outer) joint and wacked it back together. Good as new with some duct tape. Over time it 'leaks' grease, but you get that. If you clamped the boot down with proper clamps it wouldn't, but I trusted my stupid duct tape. The damn grinding noise was still there!!!

The bearing was the fun part. I finally worked up the courage to take the 'ol bastard apart again. And because I was trapped in the Sunshine Coast at the inlaws. Also while it was apart I was going to weld the control-arm-joint-thing back together (whose original spot welds came apart). Took the whole hub assembly off (with the disk still intact mind you) and called around the place for any help. There was this honda place that said they could help, but the guy who operated the press was on holiday for a couple of days. So I gave the job to them. Two days later and the guy still wasn't back, so I gave them the bird and took my Hub back.

Back to the yellow pages and I got Pedders to press the hub off (which costed $50!!). Yeah, ripped off but I had no choice did I? But the guy at pedders said he'd press the new bearing on for nothing (so off=$25 and on=$25). When he showed me the hub and depressed bearing he only returned a bearing case and two balls. I asked where the rest was, and he said this was it!!! No wonder it grinded so loud!!

Now the search was on for a new bearing. I went to a bearing 'specialist' and asked for a new city bearing. I showed them the 'old' one and they said it might be wrong, so they gave me a non turbo one. I knew it wouldn't fit but I thought, "you'll never know..."

Turned out it didn't and back to the bearing shop for me. They searched through their catalouges high and low and found no city 'turbo'. I tried telling them that ages ago. Then I said, it might be another honda part off another car (part number on my bearing was 'grinded off') and it turned out to be a Civic wagon part. Don't know what year it was (maybe 80-85, costed about $90-120) , but the bearing guys wrote  down clearly next to that part; HONDA CITY TURBO!!! I had a good laugh.

You can't buy new control arms as far as I am aware, they just don't exist.

And yeah,

After all the welding, as I only had access to an ARC welder (my trusty MIG was over on the South Side of Brisbane) I blew holes all over the place (too much power ((amps))  suppose). Bloody crap. That is why my City is off the road, because it will never pass a safety inspection. I failed one with my Silvia with bold tires ( my City T2 had bold front tires, but no one complained). Man I miss the old girl though. That screaming wastegate... mmmm... thing of beauty...

Ok I bit the bullet and dropped  my baby off yesterday.
I stressed that te stock aussie city parts WON't  fit and suggested the civic wagon for a bearing match etc.
they said out parts guys have the parts ready for us, so a one day job...
ANyway as I told them the bearings and cv/driveshafts
where a dud fit, so its taken an extra day to match them up. They said the generic brand city bearings were narrower than these...and they had to send off the drive shafts to get the cv rebiult  (as I thought).

I'm just about to go get her and hopefully they wont have hiked up their price from the quote...I had to have another sickie for the time off!

...after this it better feel more reassuring driving it   :-/

thursday came and went as did friday.

theres still some problem with the rebiult cv ends not fitting and causing wobble onthe wheels, each of them.

the right bearing was perfect he said with the left pretty much gone as expected.   found out the guy is a friend of my parents neighbours so he does deals for my dad.
so hes determined to get it sorted correctly...as I hoped to withour raising the quote price.
annoyingly he said when the driveshafts came out that was it there was no gearbox oil following it   >:(
and during the test drives (he noted after the wheels wobbling) that now with the wheel bearing noise gone
theres a noise form the gearbox.    oh well, its gonna have to be put up with I'm afriad, haaha.

..aannnyyway hopefully monday afternoon I'll see my T2 again.   :P
