ECU ... working??

does anyone know what happens if an ECU dies?
i found and old T1 with mouldy carpet, want to check the computer-

is the first sign a computer is working that the engine check light comes on?

i dont know any other way to check it's condition other than error codes, but if there's no error how do you know it's working?

If the ecu dies, your car is most likely won't start at all.

yeah i'm looking for a test to find out if
it is dead or not-

I cant think of any way except for trying to get it started, Maybe try cranking it over and seeing if the fuel injectors fire. You will only get error codes if you actually get it started I think, it doesnt work just turning it to "on"
