T1 vs Mini Cooper S

Postby el roacho » Tue Aug 08, 2006 1:35 pm

A guy I know thinks he will be able to beat me in a drag in his 1962 1275cc Mini Cooper S (naturally aspirated), which is the top of the range model and it's completely stock standard. My car is a 1983 T1 with a pod filter and the cat converter has been romoved as the only performance mods. Several people who know a bit about cars say that the Mini will win, but that only makes 75hp standard, but they are very torquey for the size of the engine. Who do you think will win the drag?

Driver skill will probably make a bigger difference than hardware in this drag I recon.

Tyre size's will play a factor...

It may be close, i hope the T1 wins. I'm sure the T1 would win a rolling start drag.

I dont think you should have much problem winning that race.. as bigelboe said though, it will come down to your skills as a driver, rather than the car.

T1 - 110hp (ish? with pod and cat), 690kg, 5 speed

Mini - 78hp, 635kg*, 4speed

A lot of people seem to think City Turbo's are 900cc odd 3cyl, like the old charade turbos, which werent real fast.

Be interesting to here the results, if you do it!

Good luck!

*EDIT: whoops! thanks bigleboe, mistyped that.

I get a weight of 635kg for the cooper

so that makes 8.1kg/HP for the mini 6.27kg/HP for the T1 That makes the T1 have about 30% more power, and much more likely to have wide tires, so you should waste him really.

I think I will put my money on the city! I have owned a 1275 mini (not cooper but was modified) and after driving the mini the city felt a lot more lively and the mini was a bit of a disapointment
As bigelboe said if you do the math , power to weight etc, it is obvious the city will win!

The mini will simpley spin its funny little wheels and the city will be gone!

And all this has to be done on a private road and not on the street yes?

PS
A good friend of mine has a genuine cooper .never thought about giving him a drag though!...Mmmmm I wonder!??

Cheers.
