What kind of exhaust have you guys got?

Postby el roacho » Sat Dec 23, 2006 6:29 pm

I have a 2 1/4" exhaust straight from the turbo with a "cherry bomb" straight through performance muffler. Trouble is, the exhaust note is not any louder than standard, just slightly deeper. I want to make it as loud as I can get it while still being legal (95db @ 4000rpm) so what kind of mufflers/resonators have you all got on your Citys and how loud is it?

One of the interesting effects of a turbo is a somewhat reduced exhaust note, I believe it's due to the removal of pulses in the exhaust flow.

You could try without a muffler altogether, as often the sound still isn't louder than allowed...

You might get away with 2 1/4" with no muffler. I personally have a 3" dump into 2.5" straight through with a lukey superturbo muffler and I think it sounds good. Not droney at all for long trips but pleasantly there when engine braking and stuff.

I just got the muffler removed and replaced with a big resonator. It sounded too loud and really shit with no muffler or resonator at all. Now it has a nice, deep sound 2 it like a big bore without attracting attention from the cops as it's not too loud.

For a T1 or T2 a 2 1/4" turbo back exhaust with no cat is the best choice, with a resonator or free flowing muffler. If it has a substantially larger turbo installed then 2 1/2 is best with a free flowing muffler at the end or a big resonator if you want it to be road legal. For a N/A City 2" will be best with a free flowing muffler because a resonator will probably make it too loud to be road legal. For race use, no muffler at all will be ideal.

A 2" with no muffler probably would be the best for race use on an NA City. Adding a bigger exhaust on an NA car usually doesn't increase performance that much unless other mods have been done to increase the engines power such as an aftermarket air intake, cam upgrade etc[/quote]

Going by the maths of it all, a 2 1/4" exhaust is all a city should ever need, unless its producing over 300hp :)

, just built an exhaust for a t2 using 2 1/4 with one muffler near to back, and it sound nice, but not much louder than stock, much better performance tho!

Cheers
