It has a few bumps and scratches but generally pretty good.
I'm still not sure if I will restore it or leave it alone

Good to see your into it, i hope thats a easy fix for you. Once you get it all up & running you gotta take it out somewhere to film the speedo & chuck it up to show everyone what a 200+wkw city goes like, it will put my messily 100-110wkw to shame

I can get a new secondhand gearbox for $350 to get the final drive gear out of and then I can get the part no for the broken bearing and replace that

Damn! I wasn't expecting a gearbox to be that expensive, i mean that their are so many D-series engines & boxes around that i thought they would be like $200 tops, theres a box down the wreckers where i live & i bet i could get it for $100, its not a LSD one though, is yours LSD? i can't remember reading that it was. There might also be strengthened crown gears out there somewhere as this could be a ongoing problem so you may have to tame down that boost.

Unfortunately Aus has a little higher prices for shitty wreaker parts than nz.
My car does have an lsd but the standard final drive just bolts straight up to it.
I looked into the aftermarket final drive sets but they are almost $600
I will just rebuild with standard bits for now and be a bit nicer to the car,to be fair I was rapeing the absolute guts out of it when it broke.
And the last guy that was running this setup drove it daily for almost 2 years so it should survive.

Another gearbox was sourced on Friday and torn down that evening.
It turns out that the final drive gears were different so I have gone from 4.06 to 4.25
I had to swap the gears into my old case because the bearings on the lsd are bigger than the ones on the open diff, not sure if the case has been machined to fit these larger bearings or its a different box.either way I have a gearbox ready to go back in the car after I get three fresh bearings for the tops of the main and secondary shafts.
In the meantime I am sorting out a few things that need to be addressed while the engine is out.
The sump plug thread is stripped out (not me,previous owner) so I will have to weld in a chunk of fresh alloy and tap a new one.sump came off today and was cleaned up.
Also the is a couple of threads stripped out of the dump pipe side of the turbo(also not me,previous owner of engine)
I will weld in fresh steel and re tap the holes soon.

Do you want to wait until it's up and running again?

Yeah that would be great. I actually passed through Wyoming on Saturday arvo and spared a thought for you when hwy patrol leapt from the side of the pacific hwy to trail my mr2 down towards coles for a kilometre. Thankfully a P-plater did something stupid right in front of him and got pulled over instead. Phew!
