Colza's T2 Fix/Build Thread

Postby James » Fri Jun 12, 2009 9:52 pm

Time to start a thread :)

OK SO chronolgically:

Went to Wanganui to pick up the city, it was in surprisingly good nick and a strong runner. Odds and sods panels and pretty rough inside.

Drove/towed it home. Was the most intense drive I have ever done! Towing rope was about 2-3m long (stretchy) so I had to concentrate really hard to keep a good following distance to Petes(madmini) commodore. Anyway after that drive we got home and started having a look at things. Did compression tests on the motor in the car and the one in the boot. Both of these were OK with the one in the car even but lowish, and the one in the boot higher but uneven.

Took the springs out, did some measuring. Then tried to do burnouts but we had a seating malfunction and the city just about ended up going through the garage wall, video to follow.

EDIT: Pics of car with new mags and no springs.

Colin made some brackets up to fit the fixed back Momo bucket seats which work pretty well, hold you very snugly.

We then pulled the engine out and stripped the engine bay so we can address the rust. Unfortunately the rust is in the middle of a whole sandwich of panels so there has been a fair amount of cutting, but its going well and we should have the rust work done by tomorrow avo.

Pulled the screen tonight and got stuck into the rust repairs. There are HEAPS of rust repairs already in it and most have been done relatively well, someone has cared for this car in the past. Used the wire from the center of the cat temperature prob hah, it works brilliantly.

OK turns out my Fiancee has most of the photos and the burnout video so just have a random assortment of photos for now.

Hah yup at my place but Colins car. He used to flat here and recently moved away but his welder and stuff was still here so its easier to work on it here.

Colza (Colin) is the bearded wonder lol.

Todays work is going well, almost got that big hole in 4th picture down filled back in with fresh steel. On a sad note I just broke my bench vice trying to press out a city bushing :(

Yes, it appears I am back

Didnt quite get the rust repairs finished this weekend. Drivers side is all back together but needs the visible welds ground down, and possibly a bit of extra steel in a few thin spots. Passenger side is still waiting for the outer skin of the pillar to go back on. Windscreen channel has new steel welded in but still needs to be ground back.

Hopefully i can get back up there in next weekend to finish it all off and maybe even get the motor back in :D

I think James has a few more pics to put up from this afternoon too.

yeah the rust repairs were carried out mostly by the cityturbo.comgoer gobbler who I originally bought it off.. James you should lend me your skills and give me a hand with my t2 :D haha yes epic fail with the burnout but even moreso epic fail at bolting the seat in on my part c_c should perhaps have mentioned I was low on 12mm shortbolts..

We had already taken the seat out, we knew it was just resting there.

Got the mad rust repair going on, looks like quality repairs,

What are the plans for this full restore with some mods?

I very much hope they are quality repairs. If i have to redo any of them i will be mighty unimpressed.

The plans for the car are daily driver and weekend motorsport.

Stripped interior, Bigelboe suspension. Engine work will include turbo upgrade, custom intake and exhaust manifolds, and a decent intercooler.

Engine internals will not be touched aside from a factory spec rebuild if that is required a bit later.

There has been talk of caging it, but no plans for that at the moment. Definitiely no more than a half cage if it is going to see more road driving than race track driving.

Yup, the Permaseal gasket sets same as Bigelboe was shipping out a while back.

Nothing on manifolds and probably wont be for a while, have to get the car on the road first and im having a mare of a time trying to get up there to work on it.

Hopefully get the engine bay painted next weekend and then i can get the motor back in and get the beast moving again.
