Bry's T2

Postby Bry » Sun Oct 11, 2009 1:04 pm

It's probably about time I made a build thread for my recently acquired T2, as I'm starting to mod it and make a few changes. I bought it off Nick on here recently for a decent price, with the intentions of it being a reliable fun daily, with a bit of street style :)

Heres how it looked in '03 when it was first imported:http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Urban-Weapon/A_1864/article.html

When I got it the paint was a bit rough, foglights were missing, along with some other little trims, although luckily it has been decently looked after. Clutch is also on its way out, although I got a new HD one with the sale :)

The mods so far:

-IHI RHF VJ26 Turbo upgrade
-Custom FMIC install by AVO (aircon removed)
-15x7 +28 Rondell Wheels with 195/50 Potenza g3's
-2.5" Turbo back exhaust (no cat)
-Wrx BOV
-Solid intake pipe with pod
-Battery relocated to boot
-Prelude front brake upgrade
-Boost gauge
-Convenient iPhone holder cradle thing
-Timing belt done, head reco'd, rack replaced, front lca bushs replaced and other maintenance stuff.

So far I've cleaned up a few little things, grabbed a pair of foglights from DXS (thanks!) which I'm yet to put on, and collected some goodies to put on it also. One of my mirrors got sideswiped whilst my car was parked.. so I grabbed these Sard Carbon F1 mirrors off a friend and chucked them on haha.

Future plans:
-Install new clutch soon
-Get some tyres for new wheels and put them on, will have to lip guards a little.
-Get boss kit so I can fit nardi
-Install headunit and make some brackets for it
-Lower it without making it handle even worse.. some camber up front would be nice too, though I don't want to spend heaps as it's just a daily!
-Find a n2 style spoiler to make the rear look a bit nicer (anybody got one they want to get rid of?)

Pretty happy with it overall, apart from a few minor issues (heater not working, interior rattles, running rich etc). But i'm surprised at how fun of it a little car it is, considering I hadn't heard of them a month ago!

How does it drive with that turbo on? How much boost are you running, when does it start to make boost and when do you see full boost?

We dont see a huge number of cars running non-standard turbos so its always good to hear feedback on what works and what doesnt :D

It actually drives pretty well, I havn't really paid attention but at a guess I'd say it comes on at about 2500 and has full boost by 3500? I'll have a look at it next time I go for a drive.

Oh and it's running 10psi, I was running 14 for a while but the clutch disliked it (so did the r33 next to/behind me )

Thats very interesting, if it is actually a VJ26 and not some funny hybrid thing.

IHI RHF5 VJ26
We’re not 100 percent sure on the origin of this turbo but it appears to be from the Japanese-market Mazda Familia GT-R (essentially a STi or Evo equivalent of the Mazda’s Familia AWD turbo). The turbocharger is identified as an IHI RHF5 VJ26.

In factory form, the Familia GT-R’s 1.8 litre engine is rated at 154kW and the turbocharger is sized to give rally teams scope for more power. Two-hundred kilowatts is reliably within reach of this turbocharger. Note that the core features a ball bearing for enhanced boost response and strength. The core is also water-cooled.

The RHF5 VJ26’s compressor inlet is 45mm diameter and the discharge nozzle is 43mm (the same as the above RHB5 VJ11). We were unable to measure the diameter of the turbine passage because the exhaust manifold was still attached but we can tell you the 4-bolt flange is 74mm square. Note that this flange appears identical to the RHB5 turbo sampled above. The dump pipe also needs 4 bolts.

This is a great, medium-size roller bearing turbocharger. It’s a pity there aren’t many around.

Nice looking rims! I dare say the offset and width will see them protrude past the flaring though..?

We'll find out soon enough :D. I tried on some 8+4 superlites and they sat out by about 35-40mm so these should be about perfect with a little persuading :p. IRS helps too, should camber in a little when I lower it.

Picked up a set of 195/50/15 Bridgestone potenza G3's with 80%~ tread for a decent price tonight.. will chuck them on the wheels tomorrow night, and lip + roll guards and fit wheels on saturday. Pics to come :D

Needs some more low, probably going to just chop a coil or 2 out of the springs. Offset is pretty much perfect though, tyres rub a little on the rear, just need to lip/roll guards a bit which I'll do when I can get a hold of mates guard roller

correct me if i am wrong but i was under the impression that you could only roll guards that are round and square or flat top ones like those on the t2 were off limits for a guard roller..

I understand what your saying, I'm not entirely sure myself, I have slightly hammered the inside lip up a little.. but guard roller should be able to be used, although it may be a bit finicky as there is no 'arc' to follow.

Im really surprised those wheels fit with that offset, looking good.

If it is a vj26 and not a vj6 then that would indeed be of interest.
