ENGINE TEARDOWN PART ID?

Postby ANTHRAXXX » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:30 pm

OK lets see if this works..

Tore down my old Turbo engine on the weekend, and found this part that's obviously shat itself. Maybe the cause of my engine blowing smoke/oil..and the source of the metal i found in the sump? It still actually ran well with no real power loss..What is this thing?

thats the thermostat, it wouldnt be causing smoke, as its connected to the cooling system,

depends on what colour smoke it has would depend on whats wrong

if you're finding metal in the sump than there is a good chance that either a piston or bearing a flogged out. good way to find out if the bearings are rooted is to remove the oil sender and screw in an oil gauge. this is because condrod and main bearings require a small clearance for oil to coat the bearing and as a bearing wears this gap becomes larger reducing the amount of oil pressure.

Okie dokie. Back when the engine was in the car it would blow out big clouds of grey smoke when you tookoff from the lights or revved it. Afew mechanics reckoned I'd done a piston or piston ring based on the bits of metal I was showing them..but having found the thermostat mangled like that with some metal torn off it made me wonder. Recall Turbocab wondered how bits from a piston would have made it into the sump? Also the engine? Did run fine/strong.

No worries! Can I mail the block to you for a rebuild? :)

The trans. needs attention as well...sometimes couldnt get it into 1st without turning the engine off first & putting it into gear..

Just blows smoke when idling for a long time, then clears up? Could be valve stem seals. I had that in my old engine.

yes valve stem seals can be linked to the oil burning but not the metal in the sump. the engine needs a full overhaul which with these cars are expensive and its custom pistons and ring unless anyone knows where to get pistons from.

Just find some good second hand pistons, they generally seem to fare pretty well, and machine the grooves to take the standard suzuki rings.

Nah my current car runs sweet, the 'blown' engine is sitting in my shed stripped as a source of spares basically. Cost's $$$ to get an engine rebuilt etc. over here.
