Outer CV boot replacement

Hi Guys,
Getting my T1 over the pits and they picked up on a small tear in the outer CV boot on the drivers side.
I'll probably have a go at repairing it where it is, but may need to replace the whole boot.
Now, the question is, can the outer joint be removed from the shaft while leaving the inner CV in the gearbox? The service manual shows how to take apart the inner CV but i would hope i don't have to take apart the inner joint just to replace the boot on the outer.
Any hints/ tips would be greatly appreciated.
