Terminal velocity

Postby doggystyle » Mon Mar 10, 2003 5:48 pm

(get it)..... i know the max speed of a t2 is about 180 but i cant get mine past 150 with a new turbo and full recond head, boosts at 4 grand (full) but 5th gear has nothing, it looks to be getting full boost, according to the factory gauge(when it works) but it just doesnt feel like it has enough guts, sort of runs out of juice the faster u go. compression is about 90 psi on all cyl. ive taken it to the coast for a blat cos i think the rings might be bunged up with carbon so i'll see if things have changed when i get back on fri. any ideas..... anyone

Compression should be 95 at 300rpm so that's not bad. Is your fuel pump producing enough pressure to drive it at that power?

Oops, got the compression figures wrong, should be 9.5 Kg/sq cm which is about 140psi  sounds like it might be getting a bit tired.

Is the compression fairly similar on all four cylinders? Could be the rings but would you would notice it blowing lots of smoke if it were.  If its not blowing heaps of smoke I would say it is more likely your valve clearences are right out causing low compression.

its done about 140 kms not really that bad the bores are mint , even have honing marks, & the timing is set at about 28 deg static basically its advanced till it wont idle any faster then backed off a bit, the comp was 90,90 60 30 but we descovered that the rings were fully carboned up, so we got them free again and they went up to 90, its also running 185 65s instead of 185 60s but thats bugger all but it also seems to boost late, starts to register at 3000 hits full at 4, 1st 2nd 3rd primo, 4th pretty ave, 5th a slug, it has a 2 1/2 inch dump into a 2 1/4 pipe, im just thiking i may be a tooth out on my valve timing... does anyone know if they're interferance motors

Hope it doesn't sound like a smart-arse boast, but when my white one was on the road, it did 175 km/h running 13 psi. The Chch guys will be familiar with the road out to West Melton. It was still picking up slightly but I had to back off when approaching a corner just before the township. It sat fairly well at that speed too.
I'm a bit scared to find out what it's going to do now!!  ;)

140 psi would be about but i got from greymouth to chch in 2 1/4 hrs, its 240 kms so my ave speed was 106kmph not bad. idont know what my top speed was cos like everyone else my speedo lights dont work but i was doing 4500 in fifth gear foot flat, as fast as i could go although its still a pig in fifth, havent checked comp figures yet to see of any change. but for a small car it held that speed wickedly and cornered like a weapon....mmmm weapon

yeah i discovered what some of my probs were, basically i could have gone diving and used my vac advance as an aqualung, so i sourced a good one, i also retarded my timing a bit and got heaps more low down torque but it still wont go over 145 >:( i think i also discovered that all city turbos reach full boost at 4000, but (theres always a but) my boost seems to fluctuate between .7 and 1 bar ??

My T2 powered T1 did 164 and the mechanic that fitted the new engine said the turbo is only producing low boost. I have to think that with these being old cars the speedos aren't all that accurate.

i actually tested the copmresions of one of my other motors and it had a comp of 150 on all cyl, then i tested my t2 and it was 150/120/95, i didnt go any further after that, pretty tired i think so it looks like new rings or either a better bottom end, that explains why one of the t1s ive got is alot faster than mine.... i also discovered two big chunks of rust behind the hinges were the window squirter filler is so alot of weildings coming my way
