PGM-FI Light is on

Hi guys, I have a 1984 Turbo II. Noticed that the PGM-FI light is on the dashboard. How can I diagnose this problem/what is this problem? I thought also I smelt petrol too. Is this problem related to something that is making the ECU running the car rich to protect it from something?

There should be a set of LEDs on the ECU (it sits under the drivers seat) which are labelled 1-2-4-8
Add the numbers of the LEDs and then that is your error code (for example, if 1 and 8 are lit, you have a code 9)

That error code will tell you what the ECU thinks is wrong and will point you in the right direction (usually)

Aah found them on the database :) I'll have a look when I sort out a new battery and keep you guys updated.

if your seeing the pgm-fi light and smelling fuel the computer might of picked up either a leaner fuel mixture than is set in the computer [from the o2 sensor or pyrometer (lean mixtures burn hotter than normal], or a drop in fuel pressure both of which can caused from a partially blocked fuel filter restricting fuel flow to the rail, a fuel pump that is one its way out/ not getting full voltage reducing the amount of fuel pressure and flow rate it can provide or lastly a leaking injector/ injector seal. easiest think to check is to look for either wetness on the fuel hoses and around the injectors or fuel stains on head and manifold. if wetness or stains are present chances are that the top injector orings have perished and are now leaking, the injectors are a bit of a b$##% to get out but this is the easiest thing to fix besides a faulty fuel pump if you can locate a replacement. if none of the items I mention are either present or working fine then the only other thing that can go wrong with the fuel system is the injectors themselves but to diagnose them you need specialist equipment only a few workshops have or there are some mobile fuel injector specialist around that will come to you.
