Anyone had the illumination go on the digital speedo?
I cant read my speed at night anymore!
Its fine during the day, but when the lights are on i cant see a thing!
Im guessing a dry solder joint somewhere?
anyone had this before?

lights on digital speedo
Re: lights on digital speedo
Digital speedo and clock normally dim when you turn the lights on, sounds like it's something in this circuit if they still work during the day. Henry

Yep, been there, done that. I know exactly what you mean, I was lucky though I didn't worry about it and it just came on a few days later, guess it probably was some kind of bad connection but strangely it's never happened since, if it ever happens again I was just planning on just replacing the whole dash (the local honda wreckers sells a whole digital dash for $30).

Re: lights on digital speedo
I've got the same problem on mine.
I'm pretty sure it's going to be one of the bulbs at the top of the dash panel. I haven't looked at it yet to tell you which one it is but I'm guessing the middle one. :)
I'll see if I can get to it this weekend.
Otherwise it's a damn good excuse if you get pulled over for speeding at night!! ;D

Re: lights on digital speedo
cheers everyone
I might pull it apart this weekend and see what I find!
I wish it would just fix itself, that would be damn handy!!
hey ppl in NZ, what sorta price you paying for cheap rough citys?
Ive now got 2 '83 city-t's (1 big project, 1 runabout)
i paid $350 for each of them, and $80 for a complete going car I wreaked for parts...
Ok bodies on them, little bit of rust, 1 with stuffed turbo, other with suspect smoking engine, but MINT as insides.
Sound about right?
Sorry for the OT post.

Re: lights on digital speedo
Ok guys, the news is not good here. The plastic that the bulbs are mounted in is rubbish. If you've run the instrument lights at full illumination it cooks the plastic making it brittle and the bulbs really will just fall out. I had to solder in jumper leads and secure the bulbs with rubber bands. The most difficult part of the job is reconnecting the speedo drive. while you've got the binacle out, replace all of the bulbs and clean everything. The heat causes a black deposit on everything inside the instrument cluster.

Yo JW,
Cheap Citys are not so common over here, especially in Christchurch! I recently bought another while the project continues it's very slow metamorphisis!
It cost $1350, which was OK. Needed some work though. Stuffed clutch, oil leak and sticky wastegate. The guy wouldn't take anything more off the price and I wanted it. Paid a further $700 to sort it. Not so cheap anymore!! :-/
Sold a fairly tidy City E (the basic Granny's model) for $400 at the same.
$350 would be great, I'd buy one at that price for more spares!!

Re: lights on digital speedo
Any reason why you can't make up a aluminium template of the thing the lights are fixed too??
or is it part of entire dash instrument structure???
Any one else seen that Japanese dude webpage where he replaced all the bulbs with blue ones??
Dash looks pretty cool in blue rather than orange...but speedo etc still orange so bit odd there....
